THE MUNICIPALITY OF SCARLINO

It seems that the Scarlino area was already inhabited in the prehistoric period, as evidenced by some findings dating back to the Bronze Age. Other archaeological discoveries demonstrate that the borg was also inhabited in the Hellenistic age. Along the coast, recent findings from the Roman era have instead confirmed the presence of lively commercial activities even before the Middle Ages. The name Scarlino, in fact, seems to derive from "Scabris Portus", a name given to the area in Roman times that identified it as a landing place between jagged and mountainous places. The village was built before the year 1000 by the Aldobrandeschi family and subsequently passed first to the bishops of Roselle and then to the Alberti family. In the thirteenth century the Aldobrandeschi took possession of the center again, which was ceded to the Pisans at the end of the century, from which it then passed to the Appiani di Piombino who incorporated it into their Principality to which it remained subordinate until the early nineteenth century. After the Napoleonic period it became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1834 the Municipality of Scarlino was downgraded to a hamlet and merged with the Municipality of Gavorrano from which it became autonomous with the Decree of the President of the Republic on 22nd May 1960. The municipality territory extends on a surface of 88 square kilometers, between the northwestern slopes of Poggio Ballone and the coastal strip, where it extends for 11 kilometers between sandy beaches that arrive to the border with the Municipality of Follonica and rocks overlooking the sea that border the Municipality of Castiglione della Pescaia. The territory reaches up to 559 meters above the sea level, the capital urban center is located 229 meters above the sea level. Along the seaboard, the climate is Mediterranean with characteristics that gradually diminish towards the hills and the hinterland..

THE BANDITE DI SCARLINO

The Bandite di Scarlino manage the agro-forestry heritage of the Tuscany Region: they are divided into 3 bodies, the largest is on Scarlino-Gavorrano and Castiglione della Pescaia. It is about 5,100 hectares. In the Municipality of Follonica, instead, the managed area is about 3,000 hectares, while on Castiglione della Pescaia the area of responsibility is about 600 hectares. The management of the regional agro-forestry heritage is aimed at maintaining and enhancing natural resources with a view to sustainability.
