Cala Martina
One of the most fascinating beaches of the Maremma
Immersed in the Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve, it overlooks the Gulf of Follonica and can be reached by land (by bike or on foot) or by sea. In addition to being a magical place from a naturalistic point of view, Cala Martina retains a very special memory. Here Giuseppe Garibaldi, persecuted by the papal guards, embarked on a fishing boat to reach Portovenere on 2nd September 1849. This event is celebrated by a bust dedicated to the Italian leader in the path that leads to the beach created by the Grosseto artist Tolomeo Faccendi. The bay is narrow: it measures about 600 meters in length and about ten meters in width. It lends itself to the snorkelling activities due to its mainly stony seabed. The waters that bathe it are crystal clear.
HOW TO REACH CALA MARTINA
From Portiglioni (Puntone di Scarlino): continue along the Garibaldi promenade southwards to the point where the road begins to rise. After about 300 meters you will find on the left the access to the Costiere area. Cala Martina can be reached via the dirt path: the distance is about 3 kilometers, which can be traveled on foot or by bike.
From the Val Martina parking: Cala Martina can be reached via the Costiere area path. From the parking the distance is about 2.5 kilometers, which can be travelled on foot or by bike.
